Er is relatief weinig bekend over de behandeling van in hun jeugd misbruikte mannen. Deze bijdrage is gebaseerd op de schaarse literatuur en eigen klinische ervaringen met de doelgroep. We bespreken het spanningsveld tussen traditionele mannelijkheidsbeelden en slachtofferschap. Inspiratie voor behandeling wordt gevonden in de literatuur over enerzijds de seksespecifieke hulpverlening aan misbruikte vrouwen en anderzijds die over posttraumatische groei. Dit laatste brengt ons bij existentiële aspecten van therapie gericht op herstel na trauma. Beeldende werkvormen en religie vertegenwoordigen in zichzelf wijzen van verhouden en verbinden die haaks staan op traditionele mannelijkheidsbeelden en op de gevolgen van seksueel misbruik. We laten aan de hand van casuïstiek zien hoe beeldende werkvormen kunnen bijdragen aan posttraumatische transformatie en aan een herdefinitie van mannelijkheid. Maar dan wel op een onconventionele, verrassende en tegendraadse manier. De adoptie verandert namelijk niet alleen het kind, het verandert ook de ouders. Het is belangrijk goed te doordenken wat dat betekent. Doen we dat niet, dan blijft het kind de buitenstaander die we genadig accepteren maar ondertussen blijven herinneren aan haar of zijn anders-zijn. Daarom is een kritische reflectie op de relatie tussen de begrippen ‘gezin’ en ‘adoptie’ nodig. Dat stelt theoloog Ruard Ganzevoort. Locating pastoral care at the interface of care for the human story and care for the stories of God, the paper explores the narrative challenges of old age and the ways in which narratives from the religious tradition can be brought into conversation with these narratives of individual lives. The paper starts by describing how we construct or “write” our life stories in old age and then looks into the question of how we tell our stories before a changing audience. Finally it discusses how pastoral care may function to connect the individual life story with the wisdom of ages.
